How to test for hardware failure?

Hey,

a while ago my workstation started acting up in a weird way: During rendering the computer almost completely freezes and I can?t even abort the rendering process via ESC. Usually I was able to keep working during testrendering to a certain degree (browsing, photoshop etc), but now I can hardly even move the cursor.
We had a power surge recently and although I am not sure about the timing, it seems plausible that this may have caused a hardware defect with some components in my workstation.

Before I completely replace the workstation I would like to know if there are any tools or if you have any ideas how to test if and what component is broken.
