  • New AMD Build help please - no overclocking

    Hi guys

I'm looking at a new workstation/render pc in about 7 weeks from now. I'm leaning towards these components but not entirely sure about exact spec as I've been out the hardware loop for a about 4 years. I'll be doing CPU as well as GPU as well as Hybrid rendering, and some sim stuff. It's highly doubtful I would go beyond 3 GPU's in a single system and would probably end up using only 2 for a long time.

CPU: AMD Threadripper 1920x or 1950x (probably the cheaper one) - or maybe 2700x releasing soon
CPU Cooling: Possibly one of these (not sure which): https://noctua.at/en/noctua-presents...epyc-platforms
MOBO: Asus Prime X399-A or perhaps Gigabyte Designare X399
    SSD (OS and Apps): M2 - Samsung 960 Pro or M2 - EVO 512GB
(other HDD): Dont need currently as everything else will be on the NAS.
    RAM: 64GB Corsair ( 8 X 8 ) Not sure which speed or ratios
DVD Drive: Whatever, any will work
GPU: Already have this and will add as needed
PSU: Had bad experience with bunch of Thermaltakes die in the past. What do I need to run the system above, taking into account possibly 3 X 1080Ti
Case/Chassis: Hate bells/whistles and lights. Need something large enough to fit the above, but not a gamer case with millions of lights. Something with good cooling and airflow, silent, that does not sound like an aircraft taking off.
    OS: Win10 Pro

Need 2 new 24inch screens. Had good results and experience with my Dell Ultra-sharps. Don't necessarily need 4K, but I don't want shiny consumer grade screens.

Any advice please? I may tone down on the CPU and MOBO if it costs too much. I'm costing a good "middle"-end PC. In the past whenever I bought systems, the average came in about $2500 USD (converted from local currency) just for the PC and OS (without screens, mouse keyboard). This is not necessarily my current budget, I'm just feeling the waters so I know what to expect when the time comes.
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

    Hey Morne,
am currently looking for a similar system with threadripper and 3-4 GPU slots. I'm pretty sure about my next PSU: Enermax Platimax 1700W seems to be the best value for the money (300 ?).
And for getting more heat out of the case I think I would go for a water cooling system: Enermax LiqTech TR4
Pretty unsure about the Mainboard, the Asus ROG Zenith Extreme E-ATX seems to be the best but it's also the most expensive, but is capable of holding 4 GPUs - just in case the GPU prices will ever go back to normal.
And I'm happy with my Dell UltraSharp U2415 monitor: 1920x1200. 100% sRGB when calibrated.

    Best regards,
    Olaf

I'm running on a threadripper 1920x and 1950x and love them both. I have a Corsair HX1000i PSU on the 1950x and a HX850i on the 1920x. Other specs below in my sig.
Also on that Noctua cooler Ive read a lot of good things about those and might try one for the heck of it or build a custom water cooling with a good CPU block to cover the entire cpu but that's only on the 1950x, my 1920 is stable at 4ghz and after rendering constant for 20ish hours the temps are only around 60C with the Kraken X62.
      Cheers,

i can recommend the fractal design cases, i have define xl r2 for my main workstation and the node 605 for renderfarms. I wanted a simple design with quietness and cooling being the priority.

I agree if you want quiet then the Fractal design ones are nice. I have a Define R6 and its very quiet. I also just got a Cooler master H500P Mesh and the 200mm fans on the front push quite a bit of air and they are very quiet and if you don't like the RGB you can just leave it disconnected.
          Cheers,

For a main workstation I would probably pick the 1950X, it will serve you a lot longer than lower core CPUs. As far as monitors, I'm very satisfied with the Eizo CS2420. With the two units I've had the pleasure to work on, both have had perfectly uniform brightness across the whole screen and no color tints. What's nice too is it's 16:10 aspect ratio, a rarity these days, so you'll have more vertical space than the regular 16:9 screens.
