Are CPU cores still a thing now that GPU rendering is "in"?

Just wondering if it's worth dropping coin on a AMD threadripper setup or to prioritise for GPU cards?

Which also brings me to another point: Should I throw away my 2x GTX 970 cards> Or can I combine them with a new GPU? Was thinking of waiting for the new 20xx series cards, Using 1x GTX 970 for the viewport and the other GTX 970 in addition to the new 20xx card.

if you are going to throw your 970 out, can i have them? Im in a similar situation myself and CPU v GPU seems to be the question of the year. I wouldnt mind a hint into which direction is best to be investing in myself.
