  • New Render Setup

    Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade and get some more horsepower to speed up my renders. At the moment I have a 4930k which is quite ok for it's age. I was thinking to go either for a new ryzen 1950x workstation and have my existing one for distribute render or getting a couple of ebay workstations for the same prie as the ryzen setup (HP Z620 for example) and do a render farm.
Will this be a simple question of calculating Cores x Frequency and the one that has more wins?

Also between distributed rendering or strip rendering what would be the best? I've used both but never really compared one to the other.

    Thanks

couple of things to consider.. you might be able to get two older machines that total more horsepower than a single new one for the same price.. but you have to consider:

    a) power consumption - older machines are less efficient, and you will be running two of them. maybe electricity is cheap where you are.. here its worth taking into account.

    b) software costs and installation/updating... two machines worse than one obviously

    c) upgrades.. if you wanna double the ram at a later date, itll cost you twice as much for two machines.

    d) space taken up?

      Thanks for the reply,

Power consumption and space aren't really an issue since one, two or even 5 machines won't make much of an impact at the moment. Software is fine since some licenses are floating and some don't need just for rendering purposes.

There is only going to be one computer to do work and the spare machines would be exclusively for rendering.

Why do you say distributed is the way to go?
