  • Is this a bug or am i a moron.

Thought this would be fun. For all those times we go ranting and raving about some nasty bug however it was as simple as a stupid user error.
    Format....
    Symptom: abc
    Real Problem: xyz

did this today and was about to report it to vlado

Symptom: in one particular scene i had problems where when i tried to render with region render or anything like that it wouldnt render where i told it to. it was a big scene so i prefered rendering in small chunks. and when i changed to view render it wasnt rendering what i expected to find in the top right corner. ouch.

Real Problem: I had the lock turned on so it would only render perspective viewport and not the camera view i wanted it to render. grrr.

        Ok

My IR map wouldn't do it's different passes, it only did one. Somehow I unchecked "multipass" in the advanced options...

Just yesterday, I couldn't believe there was light in my scene altough I turned them all off. I turned of shadows instead of the light...

Sometimes after testrendering, I forget ti turn on the global refraction setting, and I always check my materials and other settings before I think of that global checkbox. This happens to me all the time actually, usually also with displacement

I'll let you know if I think of anything else! Maybe turn this into a "checklist before trashing your PC" sticky.

I make these stupid mistakes so often that I can't even begin to remember them...

I sent a job to backburner (1500 frame animations if memory recalls) to render during the weekend. Forgot to specify new file name and location and ended up saving over another set of frames already rendered.

My forum name says it all for me :P

All I can say is good scene management and naming is crucial.

in the spirit of doing animations i hate having to run out the door so you setup the render quickly and run out only to find when you get back that its rendered a beautifull frame. just one. since you forgot to change it from single frame to range

trapezium ur a funny guy, DaElf there is actually an issue like this in maya, where sometimes not all the time, but you work in perspective do test renders etc, then create a camera but it wont render from camera view, so you start looking around check in render globals if the render is set to camera it is, but it still renders perspecitve... incase some one doesnt know maya treats every view as a camera with full range of options (unlike primitive max) anyways somehow mayas perp camera in the output rollout overrides the renderable option, so the actual camera is set to non renderable but perpsective one is....dumb haha...

with vray i almost reported one moron bug too haha....when turn on atmospheric fog the gi distribution is less then when without...i thought it was a bug, prepared a scene with images and etc then my friend says its the way it should be, more fog, less gi...i thought about it....yeah totally...haha

another thing i had in max 5, i was doing a commercial with a fish in it, so i had to rig a fish then do morph targets on it. Did everything did tests all looks good....start rendering a bunch of vertexes start to shoot upwards for a kilomiter or two. Im like wtf, go to viewport NOTHING there at that frame....render it....it screwed in the render...fine in the view port...i thought thats it time to go to tibed and abandon all normal ways of life.
hahaa...anyways eneded up rewaighting those vertex areas blindly, like shooting in the dark....
