  • Which RAM modules and timings for a 128GB RAM and Threadripper 2990 rig

    hello guys,
ive done a lot of reading but there is a lot of confusion on the topic.
i am planning to build a Threadripper 2990 renderong computer and i need to equip it with 128 GB of RAM which is amount i get very close to a lot.
is there anyone with similar setup?
what RAM modules woudo you recommend?
also i read that with populating all the ram slots i will have to manually setup the timings and voltages.
    Wha values should i use?
Having only 64 gb of ram is not an option for me whatsoever.

Thanks a lot for aour advice!

i have 2990wx with 128gb on Aorus Extreme, running G.Skill on factory XMP profile, 128GB at 2933. kit is F4-2933C14Q2-128GTZRX , timing 14-14-14-34. I did not had to manually setup any timings or voltages. I`m following topics on amd 2990wx extensively and i would not recommend anything else than samsung b-die kits, like this one from G.Skill...

Im getting this RAM for mt 2990WX build....No idea why you would need to manually adjust timings. 90% of what i have read is rubbish and people fiddling around for the sake of it!

Is that samsung b-die too Squintic?? Have you actually tested these or are you waitign for them to arrive?
are you also letting the XMP setup the rams for you without adjustin voltages?
Thing is my colleague got himself TridentZ @3200 native and he had to return them because when he set it up through XMP which gave him 1.35V the computed went blue all the time. He tried to go as low as 1.15 but still no go. Ive read the XMP profile values dont play well with TR but of course that can be all the rubbish you were mentioning.

So far, Peter Sanitras 2933 clocked kit sounds the safest way to go.

I am thinking if its worth to spend a lot more money on a faster kit clocked at 3600. Any idea what the speed benefit will be with all the slots occupied? 10%?

It`s not worth getting faster clocked kit then 2933 or 3200, chances you will run 8 sticks faster then 2933 on x399 with 2990wx are almost zero(unless you are very skilled OC`er and won a loterry too) Your colleague had probably issues because XMP gave him native clock of 3200 and not 2933,but that can be adjusted. The speed benefit of running all 8 slots is real, very real. I did lot of benchmarking on win/linux and Phoronoix suit vs Wendels(lvl 1 tech) results or different sticks size, ECC momory etc. 8x G.Skill Trident Z easily wins in 90% of scenarios. But if ask specificaly about 4 vs 8 stick, 10% easily sometimes more. anyways, some real numbers https://forum.level1techs.com/t/memo...echs/133494/72
