As the title suggests, due to the sort of imminent end of 7, is this a sane move?

You will have to upgrade eventually, so you will need to move to windows 10 and adapt sooner or later(New hardware/drivers require windows 10)
Problem with win 10 is the big updates they push 2 times per year, it is a wild ride really..so don't update until after few months when things settle and you hear from the community that all issues with this build has been solved
What happened with my recent update 1809, is that I was not able to boot to windows anymore and had to restore from a backup, I needed a new bios for this windows build to work
I had BSOD on 1709 build last year..
Another issue with windows 10 is that it can restart on its own if you are rendering over night for example, you will need to use few hacks to prevent it from doing so

Automatic updates in Windows 10 can cause issues. I had one update break the licensing for several different apps. That said, I much prefer it to Windows 7 overall and if you go with Windows 10 Pro you can defer these automatic updates (for up to a year I think) to make sure the bugs are worked out before it gets installed to your system.Steve Burke

If you push Windows 10 updates manually, it puts you into early beta releases, which is dangerous as heck. They almost make you auto-update.Bobby Parker

lots of small annoying things. automatic updates have been covered.
windows explorer & navigating folders often hangs. dragging files from one folder to another mostly doesnt work, the explorer window locks up and you have to re-navigate back in a new one and right click copy-paste. actual file and folder navigation is like i'm using an unstable third party piece of software to do it. it is INSANE.
viewing images will trip you up. the new image viewer is called 'photos' (it's awful and has no controls to display an image at 100%), and if you have muscle memory of opening photoshop by clicking start and typing 'pho' then pressing enter, you'll quickly despise the change.
djv viewer barely works.
no nested folders in the start menu anymore - most notable with the chaos group folder.
snipping tool now does not start a snip when you open it - it opens, then you have to go to it and click 'start snip'. insane, pointless change, that makes it impossible to snip un-paused actions.
I could add 10 more things to this list if I could be bothered. just slightly less functional across the board in very subtle ways.

The Photos App is insanely stupid. What modern image viewer doesn't allow you to wheel mouse zoom?Bobby Parker

I can see this post being an excellent 'general gripes' thread, which, although it wasn't meant to be, could prove to be very useful as a warning sign for anyone else considering the dilemma.
Thanks for the comments and keep 'em coming.
I for one will not be going near it for the foreseeable future
