  • Windows 10 problems?

Hi, I'm still on win7 here, but we'll soon buy another machine, and we are thinking about switching to windows 10. We already run it on a few renderslaves without trouble.
How about running it on a workstation? Are max(2019) and vary running properly?
I read about flashing render window which I had before and I'm more than happy its gone now...

Most of the machines in our office are already on Win10. Except the flashing window, which was a year or more ago I can't think of another issue related to it.
Of course you'll never know what might eventually happen but at least there are no general or known issues with it, furthermore Win10 is not something new anymore.
Actually there is one more thing that happens sometimes with Win10 updates, OpenCL drivers get broken and since V-Ray GPU and Denoiser relies on that driver it's possible to get some errors with those features. There is a solution though so this shouldn't be a valid reason to avoid Win10, furthermore Win7 support will end up in a less than a year.

What annoys me most is "focus stealing" :
Imagine you click on your 3dsmax.exe and while it is loading you want to write an email. This is not possible because the focus continously switches to the loading 3dsmax window and makes it active.

Another down side is the windows updates. Windows 10 makes the updates without asking you! So if you leave your pc for rendering during the night, you might find it "restarted after an update". There are some settings to overcome but never as transparent as in windows 7.

A new windows update ironically, is that it wont update automatically. If you google software to stop windows restarting, there are some free tools to manage this. You can set it to block all restarts. I lost a lot of render time before finding that out. I also hate that windows doesnt do the window freeze "solitaire" effect. I used to use this to know if Maya (or whatever app) had come back to life. I use Windows 10 at home, and Windows 7 at work, and I still prefer Windows 7 by a long way for 3d work.

Oh man, I thought that happened only to me ! Does it drive me nuts !

It isn't just with Max though, it seems in my case that it can be anything - you'll be working, like typing an email or something and then some other program, or the window's system has taken your focus and your typing can end up being messed up or amount to nothing.... Even worse, your typing could accidentally trigger some other event to happen because of what you typed might actually mean some command for that application which has taken the focus.

You can prevent this - I haven't had any major issues with updates occurring mid-way through work - though I believe with the latest updates from Microsoft very recently, the decision to update will be more in the User's control (I think you'll be able to postpone it for something like up to 14 days but then you must then accept the download and install).

Yeah but is not as transparent as windows 7 where you choose to update or not with adequate info about updates.

I agree with all that Alfa mentioned, i find those issues infinitely frustrating.
I ended up having to use winaero tweaker to get the mix of local policies and registry options rtight, and deactivate most of the fluff entirely (Cortana, Ads, Apps and their updates, Windows Update silliness, Live tiles, all the snooping of personal data, and so on and so forth.).
Further to this, it has a user profile death rate which defies belief, with what i assume being bugs (as the disks never had physical issues) wiping my user profile once every four to six months.
One app crashes, windows hiccups, and it freezes dead without activity of sorts.
From the next reboot, i get logged into a temp profile, my original registry irrecoverable.
I had the same installation of windows 7 for 4 years, and goodness knows i mistreated it...
For all the little quality of life additions (say, SvcHost splitting, a better taskman, better multi monitor and high resolution support, the new calculator. The basics, really.), i still loathe Win10 with a tremendous passion, and would be only too glad to drop the bloatware immediately and without second thought if they back-ported DX12 to windows 7 (a man can dream.).
I think of it as a closet monster ready to eat me alive as soon as i look away...

When I was trying to find a solution for the "focus stealing", I encountered many posts complaining about this and the funny thing is Microsoft is referring to this annoying bug as a "feature" !
