The think is. We pay Autodesk to use max in its current state. We dont pay for inovation or development.
If you dont like the "current state" dont pay and use an other software.

It's the 3ds max ecosystem (3rd party plugins, like vray) and 3d libraries which makes it hard to switch to another dcc. Autodesk is taking advantage of this obviously.

I left the AD barge, too, and am not planning to update. I will probably try a new application before paying anything else to AD.

The new deal with not being allowed to use old versions seems legally questionable, or at least highly immoral, to me. (I know, they legal team made sure it's fine for them...) It's basically a threat; If you don't stay on subscription, we're going to retroactively take back products you've bought, all the way back...Total BS. Don't drink the cool-aide

If you are renting the software, Autodesk can pull the plug on you once you stop paying and deny you access to current and old projects. It's as simple as that. People should have thought about this first before falling for Autodesk's scam of trading in their superior and much more valuable perpetual licenses for inferior rental/subscription ones. I will not be trading in mine no matter what threats Autodesk come up with (like jacking up the perpetual license price each year by 20%). I will either stop upgrading next year if the cost continues going up by unreasonably, or they will have to pry them out of my cold dead hands.

Is not just Autodesk, you realize Chaosgroup is (slowly) migrating their products to the renting model too?
Take Vray for Unreal or Cinema, rental only...

Yes, but isn't the migrating from perpetual to rental license worst thing one can do?. If for some reason I want to go to rental license, I will not go there my migrating. I'll start fresh license. By he way, I just got mail from reseller, there wasn't anymore subscription pricing information, only rental. They have some kind of campaign for rental only.

In the end the result is the same. If a company decides to transition their licensing model to rental only, you're basically screwed in the long run.
Chaosgroup is no different in this. Besides the considerable price increase, Chaosgroup is obviously targeting rental licensing.

When Adobe moved to rental, I didn't. I'm still using he latest CS versions I have. So far I haven't seen a reason to change that. I have not had any difficulties installing and authorizing CS product to a new workstations whenever I have changed it. I believe same goes with MAX at least as long as plug-ins are supported.

AD wants that you change your perpetual license to subscription...It's similar like after paying off your house you have to "donate" your house to the government to avoid paying extreme high property taxes and then they rent it to you... would be the right thing to do....pay me back what I paid and then I would decide if I want to rent my ex-house or go somewhere else. ....but AD is a dictator, so they are going to take from you sooner or later for free.

Luckily Autodesk competition is moving forward. Maxon from Cinema4D has acquired Redshift recently. Maxon seems to understand their customers and has a full perpetual license offering.

So, Maxon has a better offering then I even realized. Thanks for the link. Both perpetual and subscription licenses with option to upgrade to perpetual. Very customer friendly offering.

I was planning to do the move but I got stuck, I work with several people and revit, Autocad is part of the formats that I need to work with them.... I almost got a license of Archicad and Cinema4D but I had to put them on hold.
