  • file deduplication?

im not even sure if thats the right name.

ive got a bunch of old hard drives now, (about 10, ranging from 500GB to 3TB) due to my habit of unplugging and storing my mirrored data drives when they are full and getting new ones (a form of archiving i imagined)

ive since had lots of problems with these old drives becoming unreadable.

id like to optimise the data so i can fit it on a few new drives, maybe in a NAS.

due to the fact that data i still use regularly gets copied across to the new drives i buy, there is TONS of duplication across these various discs.

i could probably reduce what i need to store by 70% just by getting rid of copies.

so my plan is to plug as many of these drives as i can at a time, into an old machine, and run a piece of software to scan the drives and remove duplicate files.. once that has run, ill hopefully have space to fit remaining data on a single drive.

    then ill mirror that drive.

    question is... WHICH SOFTWARE?

ive seen a few suggestions, but ive not found one which specifically works across a number of drives together... just found lots which will tidy up a selected folder tree....

    any recommendations?
