Colour Reader

Has anyone ever tried one of these products?

Basically they digitally scan colour samples from swatches and give you an RGB or RAL or paint reference.
Which will hopefully take some the pain out of eyeballing reflective colour charts into transmissive RGB screens.
I've been looking to get something like this for years but always bulked at the cost of the colormonkies products.

If you have one of these I'd love to know your experience with it.

Please do that, it would be interesting to know.

I normally ask for RAL color. I have noticed, there are several RAL to RGB converters and they all give different values. If I had this color reader, I could simply use it whenever I visit customer site and compare it with my own material libraries.

We use a nix sensor in work for this and I have a cube sensor personally. Not 100% accurate but pretty close!

Well just gonna say it works, app is clean and easy to use, gives okay results, I wouldn't say 99% accurate but most of the time pretty close. If you hate guessing colour values from swatches its worth it and I'd wish I'd found one sooner.

Main thing in cg is getting the brightness of things right, if it's close on that then it's a very worthwhile investment!

I just bought this Datacolor ColorreaderPro. Well, I don't know. The samples look different in my calibrated screen. Maybe some paints are out of my displays Gamut limits. It gives values as LAB colors, so I create a color sample in Photoshop LAB mode and save it as 16 bit RGB PNG. Then I use color picker in Max material editor.

I noticed one thing. There was fingerprints on the scanned surface so I washed it carefully. I got somewhat different results after cleaning the surface.
