  • Anyone know how to do this............?

    Hi everyone.

I have been challanged with having a building 'grow' from the ground during a moving piece of film.

I have managed to work out how to do everything in the video editor. What I am unsure about is whether 3Dstudio has a function that allows you to 'grow' a building.

I suspect there's an option using an animated gizmo to 'reveal' the building but, because I don't know what it's called I can't find any info or tutorials.

Any help would be very greatly appreciated.

i did something like that. i basically made all the I beams as extruded splines so basically i could just animate the extrution perameter. then things like walls were also extruded so i could also ainmate those. just model your building in such a way as to be able to animate most of your perameters.

Saulman, have a look at the slice modifier first before jumping in to scalpel, I had tried scaple at one point on a project I was working on and had nothing but problems with it and ended using the built in slice modifier and it worked quite well. Both are bound to have their problems though. Also there used to be a plugin called "Grow" that would promise to do what you are describing but Ive also heard that it was extremely buggy and pretty much just plain crap.

Just thought you should try the "free" alternative 1st, and I would prob try to animate something like that the way Elf described if its not built yet and or depending on how detailed you want to go with it like going with studs and insulation in the walls or just using solid walls.

well the slice modifier can't cap the holes, and the cap holes modifier is a POS.
open meshes won't really render with vray.
boolean also won't work on a whole building without great trouble.

now try that with an entire building.
unfortunately cap holes only works with really, really basic shapes.

Im going to see if I can get permission to post a rendering I did a while back using power booleans, slice and cap holes all in the same clip (scary I know) but it did work verry well and far better than scalpel did on the same project.
