  • Max 2020.1

2020.1 is out. They finally managed to make the viewport detachable. I never once imagined a day like this would come during my lifetime.
The new chamfer modifier is awesome too.
Good times! Now let me test if its stable.

Editable Poly sub-object switching is even faster now.
If you had an issue with missing "User-defined" in make preview, that's fixed, too.
If you are using alembic, the triangulation is fixed.

Also hot keys has been modified. It was a bug community effort mostly driven by users.

to be able to dock more windows therefore have cleaner UI with less floating windows that I find quite messy. 4k screen that is getting more and more popular is a lot of space for all the most used windows of 3ds max neatly packed into one big 3ds max window. sort of UI of Blender or Substance Designer.

I don't care about anything but stability. Is it more stable? The latest 2019 is pretty good, but it got so bad in MAX 2017, even 4 or 5 crashes times a week is pretty good. Software this expensive should never crash.

Yes, max 2019 is pretty good and very stable. When test driving it, it never crashed once actually.
Once I installed all my plugins and scripts I started having random crashes.
But the main cause of crashes, by far, are third-party models. It's unbelievable how crappy and unnecessarily convoluted they are sometimes.

However, I would be crippled without 3rd party plugins. My scenes do start to get wobbly when I use Forest Pro. V-Ray's IPR also seems to make things get sketchy.

Years ago I put in the suggestion that they give the user the ability to search for scripts and actions by keyword for assigning buttons and hotkeys. So I love that they added that ability to the keyboard shortcut editor. BUT it makes zero sense that they un-coupled it from the CUI editor and didn't include that ability in the other customization stuff. And I currently can't find a way to assign hotkeys to drag-and-drop scripts.
