I was also surprised how low profile this topic is treated but I guess most are on rental or maintenance so they do not care, at least for now.

i am quite sure that if you read the terms of use in the latest max 2020 instalation, there will be some sort of "hard to read" line "justifying the cause".
Terms of use are always a subject to change and AD can pretty much do whatever they want.
        Its their IP.
Do you think Adobe is acting differently? Try activating old Photoshop....NO DAMN CHANCE! Even if you call support.
They re basically just following the footsteps of far cheaper software vendors......the path has been set, users havent done much about it so why the fuck should they bother.
Lets just face it we will all have to do what theyve planned for us if we want to use MAX.

I dont really mind as long as MAX keeps improving and i am kind of happy with the way its developing (unlike many). And i dont mind paying as long as i get performance for the buck and as long as my customers are paying fair amounts for my work.

just my few cents into discussion...please rest asured i am not a troll payed by AD

If somebody can find the old terms of use then we could discuss over what they wrote and what might be different to actual law. I can't find it though..

Well, I do care if I cannot use the software I have paid for. What I do not care if this cost them anything. I do not think it is problematic to software company who puts such a big effort in "popularizing" legal software to create small tool to generate the licences to old LEGAL copies of software they SOLD and took money for. I acknowledge that there is a need to 3dsmax update if you want to stay current with plugins, client demands that too because of cooperative reasons. Autodesk takes off permanent licences of the shell so in Europe some of us will take path of used software, even if they are threaten us with something like "permanent expire date", which in many eyes can be seen as illegal clauses of agreement and I am sure will be challenge at some point, but to be more effective has to be class action lawsuit. That is my perspective. As for Adobe I am not sure if there is a problem now, I am just running fresh 10 years old copy of program. I am not cheap, I just do not need anything more from 2d program although my work rely heavily on it.

It's really unfair... I'm with 3dsmax 2018 with a perpetual license and I've talked with our AD reseller about the new rental license mode.
I'm very disappointed about everything with these last AD steps .. the main problem with the rental license system is that when you stop paying, you can't use anymore the software...I think this is more something like "PIZZO"...a system that MAFIA use to give the merchants the "opportunity" to stay open and sell.
Thank you AD "Baciamo le mani!!!"

I've converted my last shop furniture 3d models to Blender 2.8... I'm just waiting the good news by Chaos....and after that....goodbye AD

OK... it's fine for you if you are ok with the way its developing, if you are ok to pay so much for that.... it's ok. But the question is for how long.
Anyway, again and again, perpetual means perpetual and now, it's not longer the case.

To answer my own, original question: The transfer of my 3ds Max 2018 license to someone else went surprisingly smooth and quick! As long as it is a transfer of license between people/companies in EU, it seems to progress without any hesitation from Autodesk’s side.

Now I just need to know what to do with my V-ray for 3ds Max 3.x license.

I'm so glad I read your message, I had this same 'argument' with someone on AD and he insisted perpetual didn't mean what you and I seem to be saying.

Now..... I'm looking to sell my copy of 3DS Max 2020 perpetual (but I'm in the UK and we are no longer in the EU )
