  • Material capture with camera+flash

There are a bunch of different papers on using a smartphone camera with a flash to get albedo, normal map and glossiness using just one or a few photos, like this and this and this. Does anyone know of any products or readily usable tools that actually does this? Something you can download and use right now?

Would be very interested in this as well! as far as I can see - there are only papers for now...

The closest I can find is Dabarti's capture tool, which is pretty cool, but is a more complicated process and doesn't give you a glossiness map.

So much cool tech is yet locked away in the theoretical realm. I'm still waiting for this piece of pure black sorcery to make it to commercial software

I came here because I was hoping that someone knows a software that can do it but I guess there's nothing around yet. Dabarti capture is great but a glossiness map would really be great to get the most accurate material.
i can't believe there's nothing around except for xrite and vrscans, which obviously is not a feasible solution...

The current best solution is to use Substance Designer.
          https://store.substance3d.com/blog/y...erial-scanner/

VRScans scans with CHAOS GROUP, so it is very easy. However, there is a certain cost.

I expect HP and Adobe [Substance] Project Captis, but it is unclear if it will be released to the public.

My guess is, like much very cool stuff; if it that cool creative stuff is left to be available as effectively 'open source', it will be sooner or later be ensnared by a large company and either monetised by them instantly, or it will disappear until they can do so without meaningful competition, whilst presumably monetising it in a 'proprietary' way to only those who can pay handsomely to benefit from it, i.e. movie/game studios.

              Just a guess...

It says on the gumroad page:

                IMPORTANT NOTE:
Public version of Dabarti Capture Tool is no longer developed or supported.

The public version was created for our internal surface scanning needs at Dabarti Studio, but to get better results and perfect seamless tiling textures We had to redesign the approach even further. This required extensive research and recreation of the software itself, as well as building custom hardware that is strongly tied to the software. At this point it's not trivial to release this setup to public and We decided to focus on providing the highest quality scans as a service instead.

We don't have enough resources to maintain and support two versions of the software therefore the public version of that tool will no longer be maintained. Existing customers can still use their remaining activations, but the technical support will be discontinued
