  • Walls and Tiles

I moved to MAX 2020 and I was happy not to be getting my Not Responding 2-3 times a day. I just installed Walls and Tiles and it seems that the issue has returned. It is too early too definitively say it is Walls and Tiles, but I do remember coming to the same conclusion back in MAX 2016. Is anyone using it in MAX 2020 without issue? There really isn't another solution like Walls and Tiles, so I am hoping it isn't my issue. My other hunch is the scene is just getting large and MAX starts to whimper.

Good to know, but bad to hear. I remember in MAX 2016, removing the plugin didn't help. I did have a script the other day crash MAX and they are investigating. It is troublesome knowing a script can kill MAX and do permanent damage.

Okay, so I installed MAX 2020 and not an issue until I installed Walls and Tiles. Again, I moved to 2020, from 2019, because of all the not responding MAX was doing. I just installed a new hard drive and MAX 2020 is running great. I am working on a project that needs three different kinds of brick, all the same color, which was what Walls & Tiles scored at. What are you going using other than Walls & Tiles to do something like this? From my memories of my MAX 2016 and Walls & Tiles issues, removing Walls & Tiles didn't fit the issue, so that's not an option when things go bad again.

VP Omnitiles Standalone! Everything Walls & Tiles does for me, but outside of 3DS MAX, which is awesome!

Several years ago Bobby I remember (I think it was you!) mentioning issues with Walls and Tiles and since then I've never reinstalled

(rightly or wrongly I took the view back then that Vizpark's plugins were more trouble than they were worth).

I use Substance Brick Generator (got off Poliigon) - use it inside 3DS Max, better than bitmaps and a lot of fun as well.

Yeah, I don't want to tarnish VizPark's reputation, but I don't want people to have to deal with what I was dealing with. If people don't have problems, please post, too. I'll check the Brick Generator you mention. I start with Acme brick generator to make each brick and then I use it in Walls & Tiles and now Omnitile.

I think, though don't quote me on this, that if you use Substance's Brick generator, you'll throw that really old Acme stuff in the bin.

Substance's Brick Generator is completely procedurual and they've thought of *everything*.

I haven't played with Substance stuff yet. Every time I tried it made little to no sense. It is built into MAX, correct?

JezUK I've just tried Substance Brick Generator on a project, also as a potential replacement for Walls & Tiles.

Brick Generator is very good and extremely flexible for different types of brick, but it's Scale limitation is a serious drawback, meaning that you can only generate areas of brick 3m x 3m in size. With any variation across the bricks, you soon notice a tiling texture, even on modest sized houses.

I've contacted Poliigon about this and apparently they are looking into it, but for the time being it does limit it's use in production.

When I tried substance materials I had tiling issues, which is why I never used it. I thought I just didn't understand how it worked. Omnitile works just like Walls & Tiles, but it is standalone software. Actually, it seems to be a lot easier than Walls & Tiles. I can create a seamless texture and then create the normal, specular, and other maps using Shader Maps.

It is but I prefer to use the standalone player to fine tune the settings.

Regarding tiling - this is true, though in my instance it worked like a charm as I needed it for creating a pretty fancy brick wall around a front door (3d was of the door).

Here is the one I just did using Omnitiles for the brick. Little learning curve and worked great! You can't see it, except for the tiny part of that far chimney, but there is the third brick pattern with the same brick.

I just used Substance for some brick and it is awesome! I purchased a whole bunch of substance materials awhile back when it first came out, but I never knew how to use them. I don't see a need for Omnitile now, however, it does a lot more than brick, so I might use it someday.

then I had some spare time and took the time to learn about the brick generator..... it was time well spent and I’m glad I did.

                              glad you like it too
