Last time I checked Autodesk don’t do free. They’re not that kind of company....Jez

Who would have thought Autodesk could keep people from selling software they buy? It takes one court decision to create precedence. If AD doesn't buy it they'll sue Blender for something and take them down.Bobby Parker

Everything I read nowadays is about Blender. The DELL guy who recently replaced my motherboard was into 3D Graphics. He said that he tried to learn MAX, even took classes, but it was far too complicated for him. I think some of have been using MAX so long, we forget that it has a pretty steep learning curve. Personally, I was self-taught and I have been using it for 20 years.Bobby Parker

It seems to be different if you switch. We've a new guy who was a Maya guy for 15 years, and he picked up max really quickly. Much of the stuff you gotta learn is general 3d essentials.
And once you wraped your head around that, it's like stepping in someone else's workshop. Everything is somewhere else, but the hammer is still a hammer.
And you can always go to google and search for "hammer equivalent in <random 3d app>"Last edited by Ihno; 29-10-2019, 05:54 AM.German guy, sorry for my English.

How many people are moving to Blender? IDK, I would love for AD to feel the pain, so I hope a lot of people are making the move. Where else can the price go up and quality goes down and it is sustainable? What's their long term game plan? Make as much money in the shortest amount of time, hoping nobody has the balls to leave? It seems that they are beating the farm on it.Bobby Parker

I can't, I work with CAD data all the time and it seems max is best for this stuff. Maya's cad importers are way slower and offer no options. Rhino sucks for animation (which I do all the time).
Modo isn't done and you even got to separately BUY the CAD importer from them.
And blender doesn't support much CAD formats (only two or so) and crashed when I tried to import some of the (huge) files clients send me.
I will stay with max, it's more likely for me to learn Houdini for the simulation stuff than blender or any other ddc which can basically do the same stuff max can do.Last edited by Ihno; 29-10-2019, 05:55 AM.German guy, sorry for my English.

So it is safe to say the suites as AD sat around the table one day and said, "they are so invested in MAX, let's crank up the price and drop R&D because they can't change now!".Bobby Parker

To be a fly on the wall at AD. One can only make assumptions, but I can imagine the conversation going in that direction based on how Max is "progressing".

Funny how you started the thread with a problem with Arion and all of the sudden turned blame on AD)) from my experience the 2020 is the best and most stable release to date. I tried downloadin Arion a few weeks ago and it worked well. I only use it for CA because the grading in vfb improved so much over the years Arion becomes almost obsolete. If youre in the archviz industry youre pretty much stuck with AD considering the usual client inputs.
most of the stuff nowadays turns to pay per service hence the new ad policy basically. I can imagine a few years further you pick up a fridge at the store and youll be paying for its service not for the product as it is. With products its bot a bad idea as it would mean producers can start making products that last long again. Not just some crap that fails within 2 years. Payment per fridges service would alow them to maintain their income while selling only fractuon of their produce. If fact, by doing so, the could even make more revenue with dar less costs
i am happy to see there are people who still beloeve in Max like Tyson with his TyFlow...Martin
