Hey Bobby, I think you are not crazy and it is a good idea to get yourself out of the office and work a bit in unusual places such as coffee shop or even at the beach as you mentioned I really wish I have more time to go out from work with my laptop, I find working outside, among people inspiring and fun.

Back to the technical stuff. I am on laptops since about 4 years, firstly macbook pro and then i switched to Gigabyte aero 15 because of 3ds max Seriously macs are just a bad choice for 3D industry nowadays, the industry where time literally means money and Apple's components being overpriced. Modern laptops are more than capable of doing some serious 3d modeling or even some light rendering on the fly. Bear in mind. your battery will last for up to max 2h. I would definitely avoid 4k screen in a laptop, your GPU will probably be much more powerful than your CPU, my gtx 1060 with NVidia denoiser easily outperforms quad-core i7 7700hq by atleast 30-50% in the render times. That means laptop could do really well also for the light/ materials development stage.

When it comes to brands, I did my research 2 years ago and a lot could change since then but I would definitely recommend Gigabyte and its premium build quality which is almost in pair with Razer, which again is really close to Apple Honestly, every time I enter electronics shop and I check laptops, I've never found anything better built than those 3 brands. New dell xps laptops seems to be very solid and offer really nice screens. Lenovo thinkpad also from the top of my head (?).

Nice screen grab! Yes, I am thinking of bookkeeping and making materials and light modeling. I have found, even with my hotspot, I can log into my main workstation and do a whole lot. I purchased the 16" MacBook Pro, but the whole no delete button and Magic Mouse made any serious work a joke. I know about the alt-delete and I could purchase a different mouse, but I guess I just snubbed my nose at Apple and returned it all. Plus, photo editing was a pain, since I could never find the image after I edited it.

The XPS 13 2-1 is supposed to be the best ultrabook you can buy and with 32Gb of RAM and 6-Cores, I think I might be impressed. I was looking at external GPU's last night, but I couldn't find one that supports more than one card. I'll see how it works and I can always return it. Every review I watch, the XPS became the person's daily driver.

I'll report back, it should be here next week.

I agree, Dell laptops are very solid too. I hope 13 inch screen is not too small for comfortable work in 3ds max.
Wouldn't external gpu box kill the whole purpose of you getting a mobile device? Apart of the fact that some laptops can't provide enough bandwidth to fully utilize one external gpu. You could make a use of DR utilizing machines from your office by fooling your xps network that it belongs to the office network (just thinking at loud).

The 13" is small, but being touch I can zoom in. We'll see... The GPU box is just an idea to play with.

I replaced my desktops with laptops and even they are more expensive than a desktop I would buy another one... I like the flexibility of working anywhere with decent power...This is my 3rd Alienware 17x

It has arrived. I have never had a Windows laptop, because the build quality wasn't there. I had a PixelBook and MacBooks, but this is my first Windows machine. So far, so good.

I supposed to be 3.9 GHz. I am not sure why it is showing 1.5 GHz, unless it is throttling.

Running MAX and V-Ray from the XPS, rendering out grayscales while my main PC is rendering out some finals on another job. This is working perfectly! As you can see, it is connected to my 43" 4k Monitor. I can toggle back and forth with a remote, or I can do a picture-in-picture, or divide the screen. With the monitor, you can have up to four devices.

I think I like the LED strip....does it serve a purpose or just aesthetic?

No, that is 2 pm . The light strip, and all the other lights in the office are HUE lights, so they are controlled through the app. I can set the mood and they even change with the music on my TV.
