I'm having a bit of trouble with this particular piece of a current model.
I've had awful issues trying to get multi-sub displacement working properly is one thing....
This light - how is it constructed in reality, anyone know? I like to build as reality but can find zero reference for this - good exteriors but nothing internal
Apart from the below I'm wondering how the orange, red and clear are separated whilst haveing a generally red covering. I have thoughts but specifics would be great.
Currently I have a base mesh which is the shape with thickness - I'm initially trying to displace only the interior faces which are the tiny diamond pattern.
I simply could not get this to work properly - using 'use object material' it seems that the material displacement settings work together with the modifier settings but in a very strange way and totally unintuitive imo.
You can see the clear differences in these images. The good and the bad show what is happening from exactly the same angle.
There are two materials; a red refractive and the same with the displacement map. Both displacement mods are set to be -50cm (just weird but an arbitrary amount to get it to show up) and the material displacement set to 1.0
The fact is that the one where I detached the displaced faces and flipped their normals is currently the only usable one, as the single mesh with the same settings just doesn't work.
I must be missing something but that doesn't explain the weird connection between the material displacement and the modifier.
Here's a link to the bits if anyone would like to take a look

What is an ideal workflow for this?
