  • Running autocad on mac?

    Hi,

I'm curious about if anyone is running autocad on mac and if they have any issues with file sharing between windows and mac platform? .... or if you experience other challenges?

We are currently a windows user office but the architects and designers would like to move to Apple and mac computers

    All feedback is appreciated!

We do use AutoCAD on Mac here but it’s mostly for cleaning drawing from clients, no problem with file sharing and editing. Working on it is perfectly fine(provided you have a decent system) but my feel is that with some optimization(i.e. like using Metal or next gen hardware coming later this year) it would be hugely faster, believe it or not an iPadPro can scroll, pan and zoom trough CAD drawing a lot faster than a Xeon workstation with dedicated GPU.
If you are switching to Mac just to run AutoCAD then I’m not sure is the best solution, on the other end if all of your tools runs fine on MacOS(i.e. no need for CUDA or Windows only softwares) then go for it, despite what people may tell you a good Mac system will be able to handle anything you trough at it just like a good PC. Here is an example of what we do using Mac workstation + Windows slaves: https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...ar-and-veranda

      Thanks for the feedback Sirio76!

...and yes we are currently trying to find out if all other tools and applications can run hassle free on Mac. We are not in a hurry (yet) with the decision but if we do it, it will be with new Mac´s.

If you are not in a hurry it will be better to wait a year or two. Within a couple years Apple will complete transition to their own CPU, and developers will have time to optimize their code and smooth out eventual software issues.
