  • Rush job

Do you guys charge more for rush jobs? I just had a client reach out to me about a large project that he needs by next week. My protocol is to avoid these because there is a reason why they are rushing and everything was probably rushed. After about an hour of email exchanges, I sent a tentative email quote, which included a 30% rush fee. I am extremely busy, so I don't need more work to do. I don't think they saw my email before the architect (might be the owner) chimed in saying, "this emailing back and forth is costing me time and money, find another render!". I am waiting for them to email me back, wanting me to send a formal quote because they can't find anyone else, at which time I'll say that I am no longer interested . Anyway, the question is, do you charge rush fees? If so, how much?

Unless your prices are already advertised or already known to that particular client, I would say that there's a rush fee attached. I would just quote a higher amount.

I quote each project individually, but I have done similar projects for them.

In that case, I'd just increase the bid. And if they come back and ask why it's higher than last time, tell them because of the compressed schedule.

I have read that you shouldn't roll up prices. People shop on prices so you should have your low price and add everything as extra.

I woke up to an email asking if I can still take their project . I wanted so bad to reply with a no thank you, but I do want to be there for my clients, even if they are jerks . I think 20% is a fair rush job charge.

I would send a follow-up email saying that if you don't receive anything back from them in x days you won't be able to help them out.

I really want to say things about this but I am so incadescently angry with my current client that all I can offer is, as usual they can real arseholes.

I did some difficult rush job work for a sports company recently and they ended up paying double my day rate plus additional cloud render costs for a 3 days turnaround over a weekend. I was happy with that and they were as well given they had print deadlines. It was at the end of a long program and outside scope but wasnt too hard as I had the assets done mostly.

Its the extyra requests once you have the assets made that can reallty make your profit margin better, but its difficlut to pick those jobs that will need it. Digital / physical campaigns are great cos you get to charge for formats of basically the same image or animation.

that said im now bloody tired.
