  • OpenEXR and creating HDRI's

    Hi,

This is a quote on the OpenEXR page :

"You can reveal more detail in OpenEXR images by changing the exposure using the Exposure slider."

My question is if I take one photo and then adjust the exposure within the OpenEXR viewer can I create "real" HDRI images without taking multiple photos? Or will this not capture the full dynamic range like taking a traditional HDRI.

their satement assumes you already have hdr images in openexr format
what you are trying to get is impossible, since digital images in ldr range dont preserve color/brightness info that goes beyond the supported range/bit depth

you will either have to shoot raw images (giving you a slightly better range at 12bit/color) or shoot sequences...

Thanks Mike. That makes total sense and I didn't think what I was thinking was possible but just had to ask in case I was missing something.
