out of curiosity - does anyone use this default folder/subfolders structure per project?

Nope...too many folders created which I personally never need, so I use my own template.

sure, I mean the whole system, not this specific default folder list.

edit: especialy how 3ds max handles backup files.

Ah ok. Explain what you mean about 'auto-switching' please....I may have missed something good that is useful to use
You get used to a certain way of working, y'know...

I do, maybe because I'm just so used to it from when I first started using 3DS Max. And do agree about the auto-switching being really handy, jumping swiftly from one project to another, simply from a dropdown list of recent projects

On this, was the bug ever fixed from few years ago where when doing a DR render, it would switch the paths to the rendered project, even if you opened a different project?

I don't think this was ever fixed, but a workaround is at the bottom of my old thread here:
              https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...lder-weirdness

(spoiler, you need to run spawner as a different user to the logged in user)

When you open a max file from the non-active project, max will prompt you to switch your active project. Instead of having to switch project folders manually each time and potentially forgetting/overwriting autobacks etc. It's a small thing, but these little fixes are quality-of-life improvements I appreciate.

Are these folders configurable? There are many I/we never would need and many others that would be needed.
                  Kind regards, Wolf S./K.

auto-switching is amazing and it was a pain to manage multiple projects without it.

I'm quite sure it's not so hard. File > project > Create default. Set your maxstart file to use that as its active project. Delete the folders you don't use. Use File > project > 'Configure project paths' to perhaps tell all the useless project paths to use one shared folder that you can hide in the project folder structure somewhere. Then when you start a new project, you can use the file > project > create from current feature (because your maxstart file will have this customized project as the default). I have not done this, but I can only assume this would work.

I use the default project but I only use a few of the folders it creates. It is just the way I have become used to doing it over time. I let the default put the scene files, render output and autoback in those respective folders. I add my own folder called "maps" where I put maps that are specific to the project, like if I use a texture map from my library but alrter it for the project or acquire a new one or.., I don't use any of the other folders but it doesn't bother me that they are there.
