When I was there, they were showing the "sky simulation" or whatever it's called, as well as the stand alone rendering system I think. Or, he was rendering from the CMD promt, so I assume that was the stand alone?

We were showing the sun/sky, vray dirt (which is an ambient occlusion texture map), vray fast sss texture map (which is - you guessed - a fast sss approximation for stuff like skin etc), the texture-mapped vray dome light, the vray physical camera plugin, vray integration with Maya, vray standalone running in 64-bit mode.

      Best regards,

            Hi Vlado,

Is this a procedural sun/sky system or is it a modification to the texture mapped dome light with hdri?

There was some confusion about it in another thread...

            Kind regards,

They are different things. The sun/sky system works as a combination of a new VRaySun light and VRaySky environment map to create a procedural lighting environment. The other is a modification of the existing VRayLight that adds texture map support to the Dome light type.

It simulates a real-world camera complete with a lens system. You can specify dimensions of the film, focal length of the lens, IOR and shape of the lens, f-stop etc. The main difference is that you can the image distortions that you get with a normal camera, complete with the accurate depth-of-field effect (e.g. the image is less blurred in the center than it is at the edges etc). V-Ray actually goes on to simulate the rays being refracted through the lens.

Vlado, will there be some sort of indication of the DOF within the max viewport or is it at render time only? It would be great if you could have some sort of idea before hitting the render button.

Hope you guys are having a great time in LA btw

Fast SSS at last (not that true SSS wasn't always quite fast in Vray). Bring it on.
