        Perfect images.

        1) If you're using Photoshop CS2 (or CS?) open your main image.

        2) Then open up z-dpeth image in PS '\select all\copy\'

        3) then select 'main image\select channels window and create new channel\select new channel\paste z-depth you copied into it\switch back to RGB.'

        4) Now go to filter\blur\lens blur. Select your DOF (depth map should appear in drop-down) and play with the top two sliders.

        Done.

This took me all of 30 seconds:

Your welcome. Once you do this a few times, you'll create it from start (max) to completion within no time. There'll be no reason to use max depth for stills (unless the upcoming vray camera has fast DOF processing.)

glass is always a problem witn post dof
suppose you had a glass window with a sticker on it. and say you set yourfocal point on the glass. now the glass, sticker and the edges of the glass should be sharp but everything behind it should be out of focus...hahaah good luck geting that done in post.

Ugh. I remember you mentioning that and I tested it out a while back - you're right. Transparency is an issue with this method...

well. we shouldnt let it die here. lets get some compositing pros in on this to let us know how to do it.

Hi, I'm trying to do this for the first time. What format do you save your Z depth channel as for it to work properly? (something photoshop can read)

                    Thanks

Wouldn't it work to turn off the glass to render the zdepth pass?

I switch over to standard Max Draft Scanline Preset and save the grayscale out of there- usually 32 bit png. I could never get the z-depth from VFB to save out right.

CCS. still wouldnt look natural. do a setup where you have a pane of glass in a simple scene and render with vray dof. then try as much as you can to replicate it in photoshop. you can get it done. z-depth cant go through glass nor can it reflect.

then just hide the glass for your zdepth....
