Texture painting software

What would be recommended software for painting textures directly onto objects? In 90's I had this plug-in called meshpaint. What would be my choice today?

There are many software out there. Substance painter being one of the best ones, its not expensive either. People also use mari, but its much more complicated and expensive. Depending on what you need, other software like mudbox can also do some painting, but if you need something more complex, substance painter is the way.
