I remember when codecs used to be offered free. atleast when its comes to playback. maybe not free when it comes to writting. I got from a client a quicktime file taken on a HD cam and it seems to use the HDV 1080i60 codec. however i cant find a codec to download anywhere online.

I think thats a codec thats in either the new Quicktime 7 (OSX is out, but Win is still beta) or one of the QT codecs that only come with DVD Studio Pro/ Motion

Also, in general, QT codecs are pretty much not available outside of a QT installation.

nope. that didnt work i upgraded QT to the 7.x beta and i still couldnt run the HDV clip. as for QT codecs being available outside quicktime sure they are. isnt the avid codec a QT codec?

veeeeeery strange now. i changed the extension from mov to mpg and all of a sudden there is the image. however its dropping frames like crazy. then, i change it to avi and it still opens. it plays every frame however in a click with a few hundred frames it shows in AE as having only 6 frames. Im assuming its a mpeg. however due to lack of mpg codec it cant play it properly

At this point its probably easiest to ask him to send it to you with a different codec

I talked to our post guy, there are a few different codecs, one of the most popular is the blackmagic http://www.blackmagic-design.com/sup....asp?techID=91 you might try that first. If not then find out what hardware he used to capture it and get the appropriate codec from the the capture card company. If it is DVCpro50 the XPpro w/ SP2 should handle it.

Is it possible to find out what camera it was shot on? Last time I checked, 1080i was a pretty unconventional standard, and there was only one camera (Sony, I believe) that could even shoot in it. It could be a proprietary codec from the camera maker or something related.
