  • Re-timer plugin....Anyone?

Does anyone work with some re-timer plug in for AE?

You know, the one with pixel based interpolation to create new frames between frames and motion blur, etc....

Just wondering abut your experiences with that,

    thank you

    regards

    Hi Giovanni;

I haven't used retimer but I've tried out Twixtor and Furnace. Basically, they can do a fairly decent job with SLOW motion in frames - it's easier for the software to track the pixels from one frame to the next if they don't move that much. However, when there is any significant amount of motion in the frames, I guess it loses track, and you get a bunch of artefacting - specifically distorted images, etc.

This same technology is used for the motion blur plugins that do pixel tracking and therefore the same problems arise when you have a lot of motion in the frames.

Finally, keep in mind that you will have to apply it on a scene by scene basis because cuts completely mess up the frame regeneration.

Also, some plugins offer the ability to use masks for tracking objects easier.

    Hope this helps,

        Thank you for the replies,
I tested the twixtor demo, for AE, and I had mixed results.

On a difficult scene, I doubt such plugins can really be used.

I had a shadow running over a concrete texture (sun is animated) and the concrete rendered as if it was quick sands..! Basically the plugin cannot tell between pixels moving from different parts (camera animation, shadows movement)...

In other details of the scene, the plugin worked very well. My buildings were rendered correctly, even against a moving clouds background...

Maybe for slow panning of the camera, without animated objects, the plugin could be used effectively to half your rendering material, since it renders interpolated frames at a fraction of the actual rendering time out of MAX. Hell, even 1/3 actually was pretty cool looking.

        Thanks again,

        gio

the retimer program by realviz is nice enough to allow you to go in and fine tune the motion.

I remember once I tried using Twixtor, it had big problem with those frames where the camera quickly changed view angles.

usually its best (not usually but always) to really plan this stuff out ahead of time. stay away from fast camera moves. fastest thing ive slowed down was a guy dunking a basketball. due to physics its usually a quick motion but retimer was able to do a nice job. i think i had about 10 frames to work with or some small number.
