That is nasty. I hope that the estimates of the dead is really wrong and very few if any got killed. Unfortunately, looking at what you have posted and seeing the news it is really bad. Just look at the forest in the middle of the first picture. Those are some pretty big trees and they got flattened! I am surprised those houses are standing if the trees got it like that! Our prayers go out to all in the disaster area.

      What a nightmare

      Shocking, truely shocking.
I am not religous in anyway but Jesus what a nightmare. I have been glued to the news since Saturday night - I have literally been screaming at the television because help has been so slow in coming to those poor people. And most of the ones left are really poor - I don't know what is going to happen, where are they going to house them ? Even for the short term. It's going to be a real test for the United States.

They need to hand out identity tags, then organize them by relationionships. Next, a tent city needs to be set up outside the effected areas where they can be delivered to (which is probably the hardest part.) Then the rest of it they can worry about later. Seems rather simple to me.

Governments such as the US should always have contingency plans for every major city - in the event of a disaster such as this or even war. You think that the US would have people strategizing these plans even in peace time. 'Exit Strategies' as the miliatary may call it.

yeah this city is below sea level...they should have had serious contingencies for something like this. supplies stored in safe places. etc etc.

I have every sympathy for them, but Im rather dissapointed in how it appears all humanity breaks down so easily. Surely this couldn't be worse then the tsunamai....

              Poverty

I really think a large meassure of the problem is the underlying poverty of the area. That combined with a weak social structure. After the tsunami - where people are very poor - they helped each other. In the states when people are poor (and tend to be badly educated) there is the feeling that nobody is going to help you so if you want something you have go and take it, dog eat dog. It was the same after the LA riots, people just going out and taking whatever they wanted, just caring about themselves, rioting about police brutality and burning their own neighbourhoods, beating each other up.

I know somebody who works for the UNICEF and she was saying that that the US government initially turned down international help. There is an element of arrogance here - now 4 days after the fact when things are really bad, they are accepting help. They wasted 4 days - how many people have suffered or died who could have been helped, I don't know why reacted so slowly. The famed Levees where only designed to withstand a Category 3 storm - Katerina was 5 just before it came ashore dropping by 1 mile an hour to make it a Category 4 storm before landfall. Lots of people knew this was going to happen.

Whatever way you spin it - they just weren't prepared and it seems like they won't be for sometime. Very very sad.

Its pretty damn wrong, but at the same time it was nto a matter of if it will happen but when.

Also Marshall Law has already been declared.
