  • Painting a house

2024, can I export a house built in 3DS MAX, import it into something else, paint detail onto it, and merge it back into MAX? UVW mapping hasn't changed in 20 years, so there has to be a better way. I know Adobe has Substance Painter, but I am unsure if that is a good fit. It seems like it is something we can do in 2024.

Depends how clean you want your uv’s while managing each asset through production.

unwrella offers a “one click” solution for unwrapping and packing UV islands within that space, but for what you’re asking for that may be unnecessary.

since you want to unwrap a box basically you could unwrap each elevation and layout your uvs that way and paint it any number of ways.

you could also do it per face in z brush or mud box but you’re limited to editing the generated uv maps within each of those apps since your uv maps essentially become garbage to work with as it randomly packs each face.

substance may offer a solution for this but I’ve never used it.

either way it’s going to require some homework on your end to figure it out.

If you do decide to learn the art of unwrapping, you’ll need one of these:

I blocked him long ago, and I don't see his posts. Ignore him; he is rude and needs to go away.

Yeah, unwrapping seems to be so 90s. Why can't I open my house, spin around it in 3D, and paint where I want to? Just like 2D in Photoshop, just in 3D.

                Ummm… you’re missing the concept entirely…

you can do just exactly that. But first you must have an understanding of how the UV coordinate system works…

this is a universal concept of how x,y,z (Cartesian/3D) and u,v (planar/2d) work together

                be careful out there!

I get it, but it is way too complicated. Do you remember Piranesi? I am thinking that, but in 3D.

                          Again, the answer is yes.
