  • Completely OT... what most of the VFX people did today.

    It all started with this:

    http://www.surveyhell.com/?q=worst_v...ny_to_work_for

Then it moved on to this:

    http://www.surveyhell.com/?q=node/61

Then it started to get out of hand:

    http://www.surveyhell.com/?q=node/70
    http://www.surveyhell.com/?q=node/73
    http://www.surveyhell.com/?q=node/76
    http://www.surveyhell.com/?q=node/78

I think most people would just sit at their desks and look for the numbers to change.

BTW... I don't share any of the popular opinions... I just thought it was funny.

        Hi !

I find this kind of surveys very interesting, specially if they are answered by real insiders... I guess lots of ppl using 3dsmax and vray have thought to join any of these companies but found that market is still ruled by maya and all these proprietary rendering systems... And i´m always curious about how many ppl in this forum is devoted to VfX scene instead of Arch previz scene...

I´m glad to see u around cpnichols, because i love vfx the most and forum tend to get too much architecture and just a few organic/artistic/whatever threads... It´s nothing bad about it, but vray is able to perform very well in a variety of situations...And oh, cinema has got soooo much glamour...and it counts isn´t it?

So cpnichols, what´s your opinion about movie cg scene compared to what you see in previz one? Do u think both fields will eventually converge as it´s said to happen with games industry?
        Sorry for the interview

        Thanks!

I'm confused about the "DD"...does that mean Digital Dimension or Digital Domain?

Digital Domain I guess. It's bigger than Digital Dimension.

DD = Digtial Domain. Most of the companies discussed are large companies. Digital Dimension is a very small company.

But listen... I realize that as an outside you may not realize that these remarks are very much an insiders comments for other insiders. Most VFX artists are spoiled and love to complain. When I explain to them that many Architects make around $35k, they are shoked. They may be woking long hours in VFX but they are making $80k to $100k... granted this is after 3+ years of experience and living in LA, but still.

As far as making the jump to VFX from archviz? The key is that no one will hire you long term. You will get a job offer for 3 month jobs, maybe 6 months. This is scary. The key is moving to a place like LA to do it. It is easier to get a job when you are here. The first job is the hardest. Once you have that, the first thing you do is network, because the second job will be much easier. By the 3rd, you will have your next job lined up before you start it. Or, you get to work at a larger company, and you are very good, and they decided to keep you around. BTW, the job market is hot right now. By Xmas, it will be cold again.

ya i got the impression by uh.. page three that 90% of the people posting were a bunch of whiners. If they had stated their case without the sophomoric profanity, I might have taken them more seriously. No offense to the good people in california, but its hard to not chalk it up to that whole "California" mentality, where greed, self-importance etc. runs wild.

Oh, and while Im sure management sucks, those complaining about it, did it in such a way, that I truly doubt they could do any better.

I'd love to see I disagree with you... but to some level, I can't...

on the other hand, I think most of this was done as a joke and should be considered as such.

I can see that as well. Its just easy to misinterpret, especially if you didn't know the sense of humor's of artists....

can someone comment on the vfx field in western canada and also in toronto. i know of the gaming industry in montreal but as far as i know vfx isnt prominent there either. im doing my part on the barbados front to push vfx however i got my wheel stuck in the arch viz groove which im trying my best to get out of now.
