LCD vs CRT

Hi everyone,
Having a lot of differences in displaying animations and images on CRT screens compared to LCD's.
We work on CRT's at work but when I take animations home to view on my LCD screen they become very blown out.

Are there any applications out there that can calibrate screens to be the same?

here are two sample images of the differences. the first one looks good to me but dark to chris. the second one looks good to chris but blown out to me.

This is a very common problem when working with both CRT and LCD. This is why graphic designers that work with print and are very concerned about color matching still work with CRT. Even though its getting harder and harder to find good CRTs without going into the stratospheric price range.

Remember, depending on your target output, both could be bad if for instance you are going to TV or film.

what really drives you crazy is when you create an animation and the clients machine has horrible screwed up gamma. They want to know why its so damn dark.

I've hear about "SPIDER" color, gamma calibrator... is around 200$ with software or something like that. My problem is that we haven't got a single CRT display to see the difference. Is always different on client's monitor tho... The closest match we were able to find is on G5's 23" cinematic display, manualy PANTONE calibrated via Illustrator.

I am not an expert in these things and what is the way for proper calibration?

im no expert either, but we have the spyder thingy. I used it on my CRT, but haven't done it on my LCD. I kinda like it that way... The LCD is certainly brighter, but not unreasonably so. Its like being able to preview what a render will look like before I take it into photoshop and correct curves.

so percy, which at the top of the post looks brighter to you on your crt?

top one looks good bottom does look a bit blown to me also!

On my CRTs (which are calibrated a bit differently from each other) the bottom one looks a bit too bright, but the top one looks a bit too dark.

honestly, id say the top is just a tad too dark, and the bottom quite a bit too light. a happy medium between the two is what Id prefer. but I dont know what your materials are supposed to be. so its all relative. This is on my CRT of course.

i actually think the top looks just about right on my LCD. which is kind of what Im talking about with seeing how it would look after a nice lil curves move in photoshop.
