  • a long shot - herringbone paving designer

    Anyone know of some clever plugin or online paving designer that can use herringbone paving patterns like you often see in town centres? They are a nightmare to create by hand in Photoshop!

    Only thing i know of is Darktree, with possibly the EnhanceT addon http://www.shaders.org/enhance_dt/tiler_patterns.html

        Thanks for those links. The textureshaker sure looks interesting, though quite complicated. I am sure if I set my mind to it I could work it out though - its just having a bit of spare time.

        The Darktree *looks* more straightforward.

        To return the favour, though you probably know about it anyway, do a search for the Acme Brick Masonary Designer - a very useful tool that I use all the time.

          Could you not take one of those images at the bottom and vectorize it and then use that for the base of your texture.

          Or even just build up the base bricks and duplicate them and render a top view and use that as the base for your texture?

            if your trying for procedural herringbone all i have to say is ouch. i tried creating my own with normal max utilities and it took me forever.

                  (DaForce - Those links aren't happenin for me)

                  I haven't done a herringbone, but I have done similar repetitive patterns that I could not use tile on. To apply it to your problem, you could try this:

                  * Model a brick (chamfer the corners, etc. to get the look you want)
                  * Copy and arrange into desired herringbone pattern
                  * Copy more to repeat the pattern so it's large enough to get the size of map you want (to avoid repeat)
                  * Create a brick mat you like (color, bump, etc)
                  * Copy the mat into a few other slots and vary the color in each slightly
                  * Use a script (Blur has one) to randomly assign materials across the bricks.
                  * Render a top view orthometric
                  * Edit the image in PS to get it to tile correctly
                  * If you want, you can render out a z-depth for a bump map as well


                  Takes a bit of doing, but it will look nice, and then you'll have a herringbone map for your library. Shoot, you could even share it here too!
