I would suspect that cgtalk would be a better forum for you on this subject.

Im pretty sure its because maya is using up every last little % of cpu power.
Try settings maya to below normal priority and then start a render and try move to a different app or window. Should work.

setting it below normal doesnt make a difference...this thing is win xp only, since it doesnt happen on win2k.

oo thats odd. Does it happen on any other xp machines using maya (assuming you have some to try it out on)

yes this is not new, it happened as soon as xp came out. I think in xp there is a "feature" which makes the windows white when they do not respond for a given amount of time. So that user knows that the program is halted or haning, incase or rendering this is sort of what happens, but where max manages to update the VFB maya does it differently. So all the time when I work with maya I prefere to render on win2k machine...But in this case i have to pay the price.

so what i was looking for was, similar thing to this:
there is a specific code that can be initiated in xp (more of a hack) that disables all of the annoying popups and hints and whatever else that winxp loves to show. Like "you have unused icons on your desctop" feature, so I run that code and bye bye, so thats what i was looking for. But might not be the case.

                        found this

Tired of getting the balloon on your SysTray saying
"You have unused Icons on your Desktop" on your Windows
XP machine? Well you can stop it. Right click on
your desktop, select Properties. When the Desktop Properties
window appears, click on the Desktop tab. Next click
on the Customize Desktop button. When the Desktop Items
window appears, uncheck the item labeled "Run Desktop
Cleanup Wizard every 60 days." You shouldn't be bothered
by the unused Icon message any more.

                        Its a start... LOL

lol daforce....yeah but then there is one where it starts saying "you are low on disk space" when you come near the hdd limit, this hack i found kills them all.
But that doesnt help in this situation

                            ahhh ok... HAHAH ah well.

hehehe thats why i still use 2k, it doesnt bug with me with useless crap. The only place it shows the lowdiskspace warning is in the event viewer.
( I really should do something about all those warnings haha)
