Core software rewrite....when do you do it ?

Chatting with friend about general software.

The rewriting of the core software came up in conversation.

So what drives the time to re write the core software?

When was the last time Vray was re written or Corona?

The MUI, is that what everybody is going for now and the language is dropped on to the core software?

Is it a expensive and long processes, and do you do it in house or contract out like a lot of companies?

Just curious.
