  • Van Life

I am leaving the big city and moving out to the country, living out of my RV. I am aiming for a simple life with fewer expenses. I am sure most of you can relate.
    • My proofs are usually full resolution at 4K, but that takes a lot of bandwidth. I'll be using Starlink in my new van life, and I want to keep the usage down as much as possible. Do you guys send low-resolution proofs?
    • I currently have my desktop as my main workhouse and my laptop as my slave. I don't use the laptop (other than watching TV while I work) because it doesn't contribute enough at render time. I must use my laptop as my leading workhorse and send renders to my PC when needed for finals. Do I need to uninstall V-Ray and install it differently? I remember MAX allowing you to install on multiple machines, but that is no longer the case, correct?
    • Is anybody else using Starlink? Any issues I should know?
When I moved to San Diego, I lived and worked out my RV for two months, which was fine. At the time, my main PC was in storage, and I purchased the laptop to work out of the RV. I never got that PC out of storage and worked from my laptop for about 16 months. Setting a render for an hour, and with denoiser, I was good. I purchased a new PC to use Vanatge, with two 4090s, but I rarely use Vanatge. The laptop might be all I use, and I might upgrade it since it is three years old.
    • Are there any recommended laptops? I currently have the Alienware 12th Gen with 64 GB of RAM with an Alienware 27 Gaming Monitor. Dell has the 14th Gen Intel® Core™i9 14900HX
Are there any other Van lifers out there?

Not a Van lifer, but I work as much as possible at our countryside cabin. We just spent winter break there - mostly chopping firewood and wandering in forests. However at same time I got three assignments out of nowhere. The scenes were about 1 GB size each. I was able to create all the required 36 renderings back there with my 2019 HP Zbook without any issues. On the same time I had my workstation in the office rendering an animation with one V-Ray rendering license. Everything with one Max license and one VRay UI license + two rendering licenses.

When leaving office, I copy all the latest projects to 3 TB USB pocket drive so whatever comes I have all the material with me there.

I was thinking about renting a space somewhere for my PC that I can use as a remote server, but then again, there are more expenses.
