          Why so dark ?

How is this going to affect all of us?

Do you think Maya or Max is going to go away ?

I feel they might merge the two products overtime Maya and 3ds calling it:

Autodesk Media and Entertainment - Maximummaya3ds9

you know how good autodesk are with product names.

                I don't know

I don't know - when I went to the presentation for the release of 8 last week they made a point of saying that all the World's of 3D are coming together. They even had a power point slide to represent that.
I think 3dsmax would love to be more involved in the film industry. I think Maya is going away - in time, they will just take anything good the code has to offer. The last few versions of Maya haven't had amazing features, they have been criticized for basically offering a bunch of bug fixes as another version. It doesn't seem to make much sense to have two competing development teams within the same company.

                  From previous thread...

I have a hunch they are going to merge the two softwares. They will probably release the version of 3ds that has is rebuilt from the ground up that has been rumoured for so long. Wow !!
I would seriously doubt either of those scenarios. There were similar rumors when Autodesk bought DCA/Softdesk, yet 8 years later (something like that anyway) we are left with a product largely unchanged (Land Desktop) although they have changed the name 3 or 4 times... I think you'll hear similar things from the Mechanical Desktop camp. Adesk seems to have decided to go with Inventor instead. We'll see how long ADT survives after Revit. And now Maya.... Who knows.

                    Yes but

Yeh but we are talking about two huge - high profile products. Getting a product named on film credits is massive, it is all about branding in the World of highend 3D, so I think it would be very much in there interests to merge the products and have that one killer project do 95% of the film work in the World.

But realistically in the world of programming there is no such thing as merging. There is development and there is abandonment. They can either continue both apps, or dump one or both and reassign programmers.

                      Will be interesting....

I bow to you're superior knowledge

I admit that I know nothing about programming. I do know somethings about marketing and if I was autodesk at the moment I would be looking to offer 1 killer application that appears to be the best of both Worlds. Then again I would never have changed 3ds from Discreet to Autodesk product line - what do I know how they are thinking.

                          Well... what about Lightscape?

Well, I wasn't a Lightscape user, but from what I've been told, Adesk incorporated some portions of Lightscape into Max. (From those who have used both, most preferred it before.) But still, this is apples and oranges. Wasn't Lightscape written as an addon or plugin to Max? If so, no big deal in sticking the two together with some gum and duct tape. Sticking 2 entirely different applications together would be like cutting a Nissan and a Bentley in half and welding them together. Wouldn't work so well.
