  • Is is worth upgrading to V-ray 7?

Years ago I read some people saying they wish they hadn't moved from 3.5 to Next. Now I'm on Next and it seems the perpetual licenses are being squeezed out. Is 7 that much better?
It's a hefty cost for someone that does little 3d but I'm afraid if I don't do it soon the option won't even be available in the future as everything is being forced subscription which I won't do.

I couldn't imagine going backwards. I'm not sure when things changed (possibly around 2019), but I haven't changed a V-Ray setting in years. Now, I hit render and almost anything I toss at it renders in about an hour. I used to spend just as much time tweaking V-Ray settings as I did anything else.

Thank you. So it sounds like Vray 7 works well for you. How much trouble should I expect opening projects that were created with Vray 3 and 4 into Vray 7?

I can not tell you that, I don't often revisit old projects.

I do that often. The oldest scene files come from 3DS for MS Dos. I'm currently on V-Ray 6. I don't know what happened between V-Ray 5 to V-Ray 6 update, but the renderings look quite different now. A client wanted me to do a little change to an one year old V-Ray 5 animation. The animation changes dramatically on the seam. It's like a whole new world in that short sequence that was changed an re-rendered.
