Damn it, 5 sided poly!!!!

Hi there;

I was playing with sub-div and came across this problem, which I'm sure there's a way around, but I just can't seem to get my head around it... Anyway, see those 5 sided polys over there?



Is there a way to fix that without having to rebuild the modela and without creating poles?

I don't know what the big deal is with 5 sided polys...

Anyhow, just target weld a few vertices if it bothers you that much:

The problem is that I once read or heard (can't remember) they are not good for animating sub-div models because of unpredictable creasing

Oh. Didnt realize you were planning on animating it. But I did get rid of the 5 sided poly LoL...

yes and no, poles are painful in a sence of trying to weight them, but they are not totally horrible. Imo there is always poles no matter what.

yes, in my experience in rigging the models and painting weights this could be some what problematic, but it is workable. It all depends on what you need to do with the animation.

There is another case, if you redirect the flow of the topology you can get rid of those poles:

Why not just do this?
(ideally Morbid angels way is the better option (depending on surrounding mesh) but in terms of fixing your mesh woudnt this suffice?)
Also... dont forget the 6 sided poly you have up the top there

DaForce, the reason why I didn't do what you suggested is because I didn't want to have vertices that irradiate 5 edges, as we get in the base of the prism. They cause the configuration I showed a couple posts ago and that was my concern at first. But as Morbid Angel says, it doesn't seem to be such a big deal, even to animate... Thanks for taking a shot at it too.
