  • How big is your ummm.... file server.

More specifically your file server that holds your reusable resources (texture maps, models, etc.). Not project specific resources just your standard library of stuff. Mine is currently 310 MB and growing by the minute. Which isn't making my system administrator happy. She would prefer to keep our library under 100 MB. But I'm thinking that by the end of the year I'll have around 500 MB.

We're an 80 person architectural firm with one dedicated visualization specialist (me) and couple dozen dabblers in the digital arts. Mostly SketchUp and Photoshop. So am I being unreasonable in storing 500 - 1,000 MB of stuff that myself and the rest of the staff will use on a daily basis? Just wondering what everyone else is doing in this regard. Thanks a bunch.

tell your sys admin she needs to stop smokin that stuff you guys grow up there in the NW. we have a 17gb drive with assets and theres like 5mb free. That includes, texture libraries, model libraries, and so on....

I think we're about to get a 300gb drive to meet our needs. Basically every knick knack, piece of furniture, texture we create gets added to our library, so it can be used another time.

To be honest i think 310 meg is kinda small .. my texture library alone is over 2 gig, not bragin but i think that would probably be a standard amount. Every new texture, model, ies file, and anything else that can be used is cataloged and saved on my server machine, so i guess the totaly size is around 4gig, gut i'll check tomorrow. So putting limits on these things is a little silly because its always growing.

300MB? That's funny! I have a number of PSD files that big!

My shared resource drive is 40 or 80 GB (can't remember exactly).

I lied. Not enough sleep. I didn't query all the folders. I actually have around 19GB. Whew! Started to feel a little inadequate there.

Our library share is on the same drive array as the projects share. We're up to around 325GB or so... not very much free space left.

Complaining about 300MB??? Sheesh, thats less than an install of MS Word...

We have 41 GB of Maps and Geometry :P

It's a monster, we've talked about cleaning it up... some assets date back to the 3ds dos days

I have around 30gigs at home just on personal stuff over the years.

At work, it is hard to tell, since we have 100TB+ of diskspace, but every show has its own resources (textures, etc...) Once you start saving all your textures in HDR float, your sys admin will have a heart attack... haha!

our office has about 10 3d guys fulltime, 3-4 projects per month avg., fileserver is 1.13TB.
since our projects keep coming back over the years (2003-2005) for addendums/new phases...we had to upgrade to 1.13T

some of our larger projects are about 1G alone (models/textures/etc...)
in this case, bigger would better
                        Needs more cowbell

One more thing to keep in mind. Diskspace is cheaper then the man hours to move stuff around, archieve etc... of course you want to back up, but you having to do the file shuffle thing is way more expensive.

I hear good things about this thing:

We currently run a dedicated linuc fileserver at 2.6TB storage. This doesnt only store reusables tho...(But then again it´s pretty much filled :P). Once a project is complete we leave reusables on the main fileserver (mainly maps) and simply buy 500GB Firewire drives to backup the project specific stuff...Firewire is pretty fast and you can easily restore things (plug in the drive dadaaaa ). The fileserver is a hotswappable raid...and yes DO USE SECURE RAID....we already lost a couple of drives after the auto-climate went down....60+Computers heat up a room pretty quick.....give it an our and you´ll loose a bunch of drives and cannot touch anything out of metal in the room because it´s boiling :P.

For HD stuff (wich is only 2D relevant as of read-performance) there´s an additional xserve raid (dual fibrechannel). I think it has 3.6TB but am not sure there...

Plus if we run out of space and need urgent "emergency storage" there´s always the drives on the 60 renderslaves hehehe..

                            Greetings,
                            Thorsten

Wow, some pretty impressive storage you guys have there.

As im only a 1 man show... and not even that really
I dont have any servers setup. But I do have 1.2TB in my computer
                              So I guess that counts.

                              PixelJockey;
You said your sys admin wants to keep your library under 100MB that sounds totally unreasonable!!!
