just standart gamma in max preferences:
unchecked gamma correction
gamma 1.8
input/output for bitmap 1/1
i was however using vray color mapping gamma with bright multiplier set to 0.45 but i have reverted back to 1.0 when i set your settings.
Either use gamma correct colormapping with bright set to 1/gamma (like you had) or apply the curve as mentioned by Rob Nederhorst in the linear space thread.
I guess it is time for the tut to clear all confusion, like you I've wrestled with these settings too long.

Dmitry, just read over it again, and noticed you were rendering in max framebuffer. In that case it was indeed good to not gamma correct.
I don't use max framebuffer, although it shouldn't make a difference, you could try to use the settings I posted and render in Vray framebuffer with gamma correction color mapping or in linear 1/1 with the adjusted curves.
