You must just find the way to make a toon shader viewable in the viewport it's not really hard, here for the fish there is two shapes the little with the diffuse color painted in PS and the bigger is the black border with a total black shader and with flipside normal to always view the border and the diffuse.
all materials are autoilluminated and with map in diffuse slot.
you shake this and in the max preference you must choose the best compromise between frame rate and graphic driver.
so you can animate everything and play all the night
You can make very good cartoon video with more work I think

This is so cooooool!
I whish I would have come up with such an idea as a student! That would have been wonderfull nights. The "art" itself doesn't matter but the fact of making that stuff on-the-fly must be a very rewarding experience .

It's total nonsens and asked myself as well "what the hell am I watching?!" but I love the starting point.

If I have some time left I might give it at try to make something similar !

hehe, finally someone understand me cool, I will make a team to do crazy video like that but more elaborated, this one was made with two guys: you make an alga I make a fish etc..........and the final creation is living hahaha
