Does anyone use power booleans? how well do they work? I downloaded their demo but it's hard to tell how well it works with smoothing as it doesn't allow it in the demo.

    It looks good. ??

I don't own Power Booleans, however, almost everything I have read or heard has said they are really good. Power Booleans will probably be my next plug-in purchase. There is a thread on the Max forum here:

Hopefully, Max will integrate Power Booleans, as the current state of Max's booleans is dreadful! But, who knows except Autodesk.

i used to work with power Boolean on max 4.0
      it was quit good.
i think that boolean in max 7 and 8 works just fine.
the end result of pb looks smoother but all of the edges are still there they are just not visible.

I can only say thumbs up for all npowersoftware Products. The Powertranslators ROCK...Powerbooleans is really nice and Powernurbs is incredible (did some beta-testing)

We had to buy this software for a specific project.
It worked really well, and the support was great, I had a lot of questions on it, the project was a rush ( of course) and all of my questions were quickly answered, via phone or e-mail

One little bug that this thing had, It screwed my installation of max, I had to re-install both max and n-power software, and I had to call the support, cause the software leaves files in your machine that you need to manually remove. Other than that, that's great.

Come on, people! Boolean operations are a total crutch! I've been boolean free for the past three years, and I'm loving it -- ask me how!

Hehe, sorry 'bout that, I've been crusading against booleans for some time now with my modelers since, with VRay especially, max's native boolean tools are death by tiny triangles. But honestly once I worked myself away from the solid modeling mentality and started approaching everything as faces and surfaces, I've been much more flexible in my process and never have to deal with unpredictable face shading.

That being said, I'm sure booleans still have their place. It's been awhile since I did any non-architectural modeling.

There's a quirk around that... it does work with VRayDisplacementMod in Subdivision mode - since the subdivision is done on the fly during the rendering and is not a "true" modifier. From what I have seen, power booleans seem to work really well.

              Best regards,

I have them & I really like them. I have gotten so tired trying to find work arounds for cutting holes in walls. I have a project with curving walls that I did almost everything with PB. And the support is great and fast. The only thing is I think we should not have to pay for them as max should do this already.

Hey all, thanks for all the info.

                  vlado,

thanks I'll give it a try

                  ShaunDon,

I never use Booleans because they suck so bad. I always think it would be easier sometimes to build things if booleans would work properly and saw power booleans and my hopes were raised. it's that idea of cutting away from a block that seems very intuitive.
