  • x2 or p4-660?

I'm about to get some computers for render farm.
I've seen all the post about the amd x2 , what my dealer in Israel has to offer me is :
    amd athlon 64 3500 (2.2gh) socket 939 or
    intel p4-660 3.4ghz 64 bit.
which one do you think will preform better (looking at the benchmark i can't recognize any of the in there.

    btw
is this athlon is what you called the x2? because when I've told my dealer that i want an amd x2 he didn't know what i was talking about.

The athlon 3500 is most certainly NOT an X2, its a single core cpu. You would be very upset if you bought that expecting it to perform like an X2.

Buy mail-order. Your local dealer is bound to have older, more expensive and slower systems than what you can get direct, plus you pay for his much higher overhead. If he doesn't know what an X2 is, you should probably at least shop somewhere else....

daForce the exact name of the x2 is AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+?
this one cost around 500 usd here.
do you recommand this one or a higher model? price/preformance?

          Well its an "AMD Athlon X2" they come in a few speeds, 3800 4200 4400 4600 4800

No the intel has nothing to do with AMD and therefore is not an X2.
Its part of the Athlon family..see link

I would suggest you get the Athlon x2 4400 as it has 2mb of cache the 4200 has 1mb.

Yeah there are Pentiums that are dual core as well. But they are basically crap... not well made and dont perfom all that well.

strange though. there was an x2 xeon system that performed rather well on the bench mark

What do you think about this?
(this will be a render node)

what do you think about the prices?

                        Yeah looks good.
If it were a workstation machine i would change some parts but since its just a render slave then thats all fine.

                              Your Dealer is clueless.
Intel bites, hot and crappy FPU, go AMD X2 4200 or higher if you can afford it. We are running tons of these and the were cheap and run like the wind....
Two heads are better than one ...
....but some head is better than none.....
