  • Win XP 64 and vray install problem

I just loaded XP 64 on a new computer and installed MAX8. I then tried to install vray 1.408.03 on that.

The problem is that vray will not install the VRLserver.exe or spawner in the max root directory. I have installed it on three other machines with plain XP without a problem.

I reinstalled max and tried again but no luck. This is a fresh install and there are no ther programs loaded as yet. Any ideas?

Copy the files manually to the folders; probably for some reason Windows does not allow the installation to write them to the max root folder.

I had no problem installing Vray on XP64. I noticed that Max8 by default wants to install to a location in Program Files (which on XP64 is C:\Program Files(x86)\Autodesk\3dsmax instead of to C:\3dsmax8, perhaps this is the problem? I installed to c:\3dsmax8 for the purposes of consistency with previous versions of max and with our renderfarm, other workstations, etc.

I did as suggested and installed max to it's own directory. Vray is not installing the server or spawner files at all. All the others files appear to be were they should be.

I even tried copying the server and spawner files from another computer on the farm that are not reqistered, just slaves, but still no go.

I've never had a problem before, as I said. MAX is working fine. When I open the render dialog for vray it says that all licenses are engaged and shows error in the window. I don't even have it hooked up to the network yet.

I want to transfer my liscence to this computer but I can't get a request code.

Vlado, do you have this version that can be manually installed?

Could it be XP is considering them system files and it's set to hide them?????

Do you have any virus protection that might be getting them?

One other thing to try is to open up the 32 bit Internet Explorer and put the max directory in as the URL. This will be just like explorer but a 32 bit version the 64 bit explorer is a little buggy.

Using this method you can get the right click options for Winzip and other apps which are broken in the 64 bit explorer.

I have explorer set to show all files. I can copy the files from another computer and they show up in the MAX directory but, they don't work. If I try to open spawner, nothing happens. I can generate a request code now by clicking on the file in the directory, but that's as far as it will go.

Like I said, very strange. I'm at a loss as to what else to try.

My motherboard is the Asus A8N-E and I did have a problem with the 64 bit network drivers so I deleted them and installed the default drivers that come with the board. Everthing works fine with those. I can see everthing on the network when I connect to it and the other computers can see the 64 bit computer. This however, should not be causing the problem.

The spawner will simply do nothing, which is a very big problem.

I really need the larger memory access with XP-64 for a project I'm doing.

I was considering installing XP-64 on all my computers but now........

Side note: Everthing worked fine when the computer had WIN XP 32 bit on it. There is nothing else installed on this computer except WIN -64, MAX and vray. I have thew firewall disabled.
