  • geforce 7800GT core speed problem with max

    hi,
got some tech question...i built a new computer with geforce 7800GT card.
everything works great but while playing around with overclocking tools i noticed something strange and ugly:

    (this is from rivatuner)

the geforce 7800 knows 2 speed states (similar to speedstep on notebooks)
    in 2d mode it's clocked at 275Mhz
    in 3d mode 400Mhz.

this are factory default settings(!!), no settings changed or overclocked.
the conclusion is that the nvidia drivers don't recognize max (using directx) as a 3D app, and the video performance is much lower than it should be.

am i missing something or is this really the case? is everybody using his/her geforce card at half-throttle in max?

might be the case if the driver doesn't detect a know 3d application
from what i know most drivers nowadays optimize their settings for each game the user runs
so it could be that the driver doesn't know about your current version of max (processname or any other method that gets used to recognize it differs from what is stored in the driver settings)
since you're already using rivatuner: can't you just set the clock speed to be at the higher level all the time?

btw: does changing to opengl make a difference?

cant offer any specific advice since i don't use a geforce 7xxx (would be nice tho' )

Thanks for the information. I just went into the nvidia properties and added a profile for max - set my settings to performance. Didn't quite know what I could switch off so I left everything else to default. Unfortunately I ran rivatuner after the fact so I can't compare on my own system unless I want to go back to the default settings - too busy atm.

      Here's my results:

Have you tried switching between directX/ogl?

yeah but i'd like to keep the lower clock speed in 2d, if possible.
and i want to check if it's just my system or if really everyone is using only half the clock speed in max, with the default driver settings.

jujubee, the quality/performance slider in the nvidia driver only affects texture filtering, as far as i know.
but in your graph it looks like your card is always running at full speed.

Have you tried switching between directX/ogl?
yes...in opengl the driver correctly detects 3D mode and switches to full clock speed. but opengl is still very slow and laggy compared to directx (max7).

what brand of 7800 do you use? Give it a quick run and see if that addresses your issue.

Hmmm. Mine stays at 425 even if go back to the default settings. I have a BFG 7800GT OC. Are there any automatic overclocking tools installed on your computer? Also check your BIOS for any strange settings.

                ASUS extreme N7800GT
but i use the latest(?) generic nvidia drivers, 83.40.
i will further test everything and report back if i find something.

thanks for your replies so far.
