  • 4 gb = 3.25 gb?

    O.K.,

just installed my new render system with 4gb of memory (2* paired corsair modules of 2*1gb) on win xp 64. Does anyone know why it shows only 3.25gb?

3.25 available? Is the rest dedicated to the operating system?

Could be your BIOS RAM settings - you might want to reset your BIOS so that it re-autodetects your RAM. Also, run a memtest afterwards - just be prepared to give up a couple hours on the scan.

Just remembered - I thought I read some issues that with some motherboards (my asus a8n in particular) they incorrectly displayed the wrong memory in regards to win64. Definitely check for a BIOS update - what type of motherboard do you have?

I have 3 asus a8n-e boards and they all correctly say 4 gig running win64 on all. I agree, check your bios.

Im pretty certain the Asus had issues with earlier bioses and more than 3gb of ram.
Update your bios and im sure you will be fine.

                  Thanks for the replies,

I haven't build this system myself, so I thought the builders should have taken care of it. Seems like not then. I'll check bios. THe motherboard is a DFI nF4 U-D. Pretty new model, no?

to Daelf: I take everything back I said about expensive Boxxes...

hmmm DFI hey.. same as me. I had no problem but then again im only running 2gb of ram.
Do a bios update anyway.. you never know.

i think i read somewhere that some mobos have problems with 4 1Gb sticks of memory

the recommendation was to use only 3 dimm slots unless registered memory is used
depends on the brand of mobo, its chipset and its bios though

also there were boards with 4 slots that only support 3gb of ram - complete nonsense if you ask me

                      cu mike

Thanks for the link, but it depresses me
I bought the compu at Komplett, but they are not helpful at all. The system inside is a complete mess, some cables were installed under tension.
                        Normal they said.
Now I called them about the 3.4 gb problem. "nothing wrong, the system is stable, so why are you complaining?

Fortunately they are members of a home shopping organization, just mailed them, let's see what happens.

IMO, THEY should have allocated the memory problem, not me.

Damn I am Pissed off right now.

                        ...sorry for the rant...

"the system is stable, why are you complaining" ... OMG... would never shop there again.

No indeed, doesn't sound good at all, but I will do everything I can to get them take back the system and give me my money back. After all they still have not delivered what I paid for...

Luckily another voice in me tries to calm me down: it's only a pc, it's only money...

                              well best of luck mate!!

If you look at it this way.. worse come to worse.. all you hve to do is update your bios and rearrange the inside of your case.. .could certainly be worse.
BUT if the ram problem doesnt get fixed by a bios update.. that IS there problem to fix.
