        thanks for the replys,
I did try the bitmap/photometric path tool in the utilities, but its extremely slow as it tries to pull all of the maps off our VPN.
I found a blurscript that does almost exactly what I want it to do in a fraction of the time it would take to use the max utility.

I know this one is a bit old but which BlurScript did you find?
We just migrated servers and none of the old standby scripts
can convert all materials in the file just ones applied apparently.

I need to replace portion of path strings.

The best method I've found to handle this problem is the Asset Tracker and in the case of a VPN unplug from the network for a bit. If you use floating licenses then you can just check one out for a few hours.

woah someone pull this thread from the dark ages!
The assett tracker in max 8.3 is the best thing to use, the blur script sometimes worked but it tended to crash max 9 times out of 10.
