  • Animation Noise Reduction

Does anyone have any techniques/applications to reduce noise in an animation? I have glossies in a scene and I am concerend that it will cause flickering when composited for final.

Try "Virtual Dub" It has a video filter called "temporal smoother".
This is something like a frameblending filter... but the result looks much better than using a simple frame blending. It works well on bigger splotches
like they would occur when using Irradiance maps and animated light/objects. doesn´t work so well for grainy noise like non-interpolated glossines or PPT.

I suppose you can also use NeatImage or something similar to reduce the noise in the individual frames.

I just did a quick test with temporal smoother in virtual dub and the results are astounding. Compare these 2 avis...

I'll note that this can have undesirable affects, loss of detail and excessive blurring etc. You can adjust the amount of the filter so that you don't get too much blurring in other areas (for me it's my paver edges) and you can easily render a b&w mask and composite so that only problem objects like grass and trees are affected.
