  • Power Nurbs

Anybody out there used Power Nurbs. I am going into a bit of tricky modelling and was wondering if it is worth getting the upgrade from Power Solids. I haven't had a huge amount of reliability with nPower software in the past, but what can I say I am an eternal optimistic when it comes to software
Anybody using or used it ?

    Thanks as always

Been betatesting it...and tho it still has some flaws and instabilities i really like it. The Feature set is GREAT...the only things that lack a bit atm are the usability and the docs...other then that i love them...still trying to talk the bosses into buying them

cant speak for power nurbs, I have picked at demo version, but it seemed quite complicated....
perhaps a standalone nurbs packedge would be better, like rhino. I tried it, and love it

Well we also took a look.

I think its a good idea, but still needs much work in stability.

Well we didnt dive in to deep though. But some things realy could be done better.

sometimes to change things is very confusing cause you have to switch on a subobject of a subobject of a subobject, and dont forget to turn it of again.

also i think they should have organised it rather with modifiers that could be switchted on and of also maybe to reorganise order this way would have been easiier.

well but for smaler jobs its realy nice.

They got aNavigator since a while tom. So you dont have to click thru the operator windows anymore but got the hierarchy in a treeview. I agree that it would be better to use with modifiers but i assume that wont happen due to the nature of the underlying hierarchical nurbs/solids core.

            Thanks

Thanks guys - it seems as I expected - cool concept but not quite there yet. I have to ask myself are the benefits worth the risk of instability ? That age old question when working with something new. I might look at Rhino again - after doing a bit of Zbrush working in a seperate package doesn't seem as daunting anymore.
            Again thanks for the help.

              [//Shock Paddles ON]

I revive this topic cuz I'm thinking about buying a license of PowerNurbs PRO (which now integrates powerbooleans and power solids) I've watched the features video and it sounds really promising ! (despite the very complicated range of interlinked features in the different products)

Anybody has tried a recent version, near to the actual Power Nurbs pro 2.7 ?

Hm. Well, it's a nice and good nurbs addition to max. As there's no nurbs inside max. You can call it whatever you like, but it's not a nurbs
For me, it's very mmm hard to model with nurbs inside max. Even with PowerNURBS.
I love Rhino - truly nurbs app. So, in my case - I've bought only PowerTranslators, to import iges and 3dm (rhino) files to max. Model some things inside Rhino and then import to max via powertranslator. And that's it. Rhino still far more suitable for nurbs modeling...

                Cheers

So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

I played with newer builds, just didnt find the time to update to 2.7 yet due to crunch times. We got 2 PowerTranslators lics, one beeing Advanced, one beeing Pro. I still dig them, so we mainly use them to Import rather then Model

Thanks for these answers, I really want to learn nurbs modelling and those perfect curves. I know the max "nurbs" aren't the solution.

But I'm not sure I want to learn a completely new program, and spend to much money (995$ for the max bundle, but 995$ for rhino with 295 for the translator for less nPower tools but a complete program)

At the moment if it's for learning purpose, so I can stick with the demos of both soft/plugin to see what their functionality. I had a good experience a while ago with powerbooleeans, which fixed one of the major issues in Max... so I tought they've solved one of the other major issue, the so called "nurbs" in max

instinct : what do you use for modelling ? Rhino ?

we dont really do much hard surface modelling, hence we stick to poly-modelling for most stuff. We did some Rhino and some PNurbs, that varies, but it's not too often.

You still can try Rhino Evaluation. Hope you will find it better to learn
                        NURBS, of course.

                          Using modo now

About 3 months ago we got modo and I use if now for the more challenge modelling jobs. It is very different to PowerNurbs being a strictly polygon modeller, but it is fantastic at mesh clean up. For those small things like stray verts or edges it is great for dealing with. That and the ability to precisely bevel edges make worthwhile for me.
I haven't looked at powernurbs for some time, maybe it has improved since I last played with a demo.

                          Hope this helps.

Oh! Modo. Saw it, tested it.... Maybe some tutorials to start with ? As I really like interface. Diff. to max alot. Here comes a trouble...
